HBO’s thriller series True Detective is slowly progressing toward a third season.
While the season has not yet been given the greenlight, creator and writer Nic Pizzolatto has penned at least the first two episodes. David Milch, the mind behind such shows as Deadwood and NYPD Blue, has joined forces with Pizzolatto.
The extent of the collaboration is unknown as of yet and has not been formalized, but Milch would bring much to the table. The first season of True Detective launched in 2014 to critical acclaim. 2015’s second season did not meet the same success. It was unclear if there would be a third season, but HBO head of programming Casey Bloys assured fans that it was possible.
“Both Nic and HBO are open to another season,” Bloys reported in 2016. “I don’t think Nic has a take and he’s working on some other projects. We’re open to somebody else writing it and Nic supervising it. It’s a valuable franchise, it’s not dead, we just don’t have a take for a third season yet.”
Matthew McConaughey also recently shared his interest in reprising his season one role, but it remains unclear if that would even be possible, given the plot and story arc haven’t been established.
