It all came down to a tie between Wendell Holland and Domenick Abbate, which made history in the 36 season-long reality TV show Survivor. The two were dominant contestants who initially made a deep bond, but ended with battling for their potential $1 million prize which was in the hands of third finalist, Laurel Johnson.

chose to reveal the results to the contestants in Fiji rather than fly them back to the United States for the first shock of the night. With this, viewers learned that Holland and Abbate had both received five votes each, while Johnson received none.
Last year during the Survivor: Game Changers finale, Probst disclosed exactly what would happen if there were to be a tie between the contestants at the final Tribal Council. He revealed that the third finalist would place the vote to decide the winner. This hypothetical scenario finally became a reality on the Survivor: Ghost Island season finale.

Ultimately, Johnson voted for Holland, which made him the winner of this season’s Survivor. However, the new open discussion structure of the Tribal Council (originally started in Game Changers) allowed for debate between the jurors and for catty takedowns between Holland and Abbate.
“I hate that I had to do that, you guys,” Johnson said.
Holland and Abbate had achieved numerous idols, advantages and immunities throughout the season, but perhaps Abbate’s go big or go home attitude caused him the loss to Holland’s unshowy tactics.
