Survivor: Edge of Extinction contestant Chris Underwood, made it back into the game after being the third person voted out, winning $1 million – in three days.

The premise for Edge of Extinction is that contestants, who were voted out, have a chance at reentering the game if they can survive extinction island.

Castaways who manage to endure the conditions on the island without withdrawing can earn certain advantages in the game once they return; those who remain on the island can also choose to become the jury.

Underwood was eliminated early in the game, and he spent his 28 days on extinction island wisely earning the trust of players, who would later be part of the jury in the final vote.

Once Underwood returned to the game, he played strategically and made one contestant unnecessarily use her immunity idol on his behalf, when he already had one. He would later use that same idol to earn himself a spot in the final four.

He then won the final immunity challenge, but instead chose to forfeit his immunity to face the clear front-runner Rick Devens in a one-on-one duel, which Chris won.

Underwood’s strategic maneuvering made him the favorite in the eyes of the jury ahead of both Julie Rosenberg and Gavin Whitson, who never received a vote against him. Underwood became the sole survivor and won the prize money.

Underwood had this say about his Survivor experience and on whether he’ll return for a future season.

“I feel really at peace with my Survivor experience,” said Underwood. “I know it’s not the traditional experience that most people get, But it couldn’t have ended better for me. And I grew so much. I think for now I’m going to sit on the sidelines and be a fan, enjoy the game from the sidelines. But, who knows. A few years from now, things might change.”
