The frontman of the band Sugar Ray, Mark McGrath, recently revealed after years of performing music, he’s starting to lose his hearing.

The 50-year-old singer addressed the issue of his hearing loss in a recent interview.

“I’m deaf now. I cannot hear any more,” McGrath said in a statement. “It’s years and years of being on the road and being two feet in front of symbols and drums. So high frequencies, I can’t hear anymore. I’ll be listening to people and they’ll tell me their names and I can’t hear anymore.”

“It’s scary because my job is hearing,” he continued. “[The future] is absolutely a worry of mine.”

McGrath, who is still obligated to perform throughout the year, has been recommended by an audiologist to wear an in-ear, a type of hearing aid that blocks out background noise, making it easier for performers to hear themselves.

McGrath say he has shifted his priorities in recent years.

“It’s funny, I got into music and rock n’ roll not to worry about any of this: business, mindsets, health. I wanted to party, I’m in a band, that’s what you do,” McGrath said in a statement. “And then life catches up to you and reality happens.”

McGrath has acknowledged the likelihood that his hearing can never be repaired, and he’s taking proactive steps to prevent further damage.

“You can’t repair your hearing,” he said in a statement. “Once it goes, it goes. You can hope to stop the damage.”
