Spike Lee was reportedly furious when Green Book was announced as this year’s Best Picture winner. Lee waved his arms in disgust and appeared to be trying to leave the Dolby Theater, but was halted at the doors before returning to his seat until the speeches were over.
The title of Green Book, directed by Peter Farrelly, refers a guidebook African-Americans used to avoid segregated destinations while traveling in the south before and during the civil rights era. Green Book stars Mahershala Ali, the best supporting actor, and Viggo Mortensen.
Green Book has been widely criticized for its racial stereotypes and its use of the “white savior” trope.
Lee won his first Oscar for Best Screenplay last night, 30 years after Do the Right Thing was passed over for a Best Picture nomination in 1989, which was won by Driving Miss Daisy. Lee even told the audience to “do the right thing” while accepting his Oscar.
