Saturday Night Live’s sketch of the November Democratic Debate was nothing short of hilarious. The skit was jam-packed with the funniest people from the show’s past and present including Will Ferrell, who played Tom Steyer and Woody Harrelson, who played a delusional Joe Biden. Half of the candidates were played by guest stars and half were played by cast members.
From the cast SNL had Kate Mckinnon as Elizabeth Warren, Colin Jost as Pete Buttigieg, Chris Redd as Cory Booker, Bowen Yang as Andrew Yang, Cecily Strong as Tulsi Gabbard and Melissa Villasenor as Rachel Madow. The guests included Maya Rudolph as Kamala Harris, Ratchel Dratch as Amy Kobuchar, Larry David as Bernie Sanders and Fred Armisen as Mike Bloomberg.
100 CELEBRITIES WHO DIED IN 2019 – TRIBUTE SLIDESHOW
McKinnon plays a perfect Warren, making references to “mom-hosting-Thanksgiving energy” and “maize” as a way of reminding us that Warren has boasted about her Native American heritage (although she had very little DNA as a percentage). Rudolph’s character insists on nabbing Harris’ obsession with being hip. Rudolph’s Harris admits the ignoring of dropping poll numbers and instead prioritizes getting a viral moment like a GIF or “Gonna tell my kids this was Michelle Obama” referencing a recent meme of videos and pictures comparing celebrities to lookalikes.
Strong’s Gabbard plays the villain in the room, who states, “I smell your fear and it makes me stronger. I’m wearing the white suit of your fallen hero, Hillary Clinton.” Just like the actual debate SNL’s skit build-up leaves no room for actual substance. David’s Sanders gives his opinion on healthcare by saying, “no co-pay. No out of pocket. The only thing that comes out of my pocket are tissues, receipts, loose cough drops, a movie stub for Florence Foster Jenkins which was, uhh, so-so and of course the little button in the baggie that comes with the pants. Most people throw it out. Do yourself a favor, hold onto it. You never know.”
Who doesn’t love SNL when Ferrell, David, Rudolph and Harrelson are there, but it does bring up the question. Does SNL trust their own cast with such an important sketch?
