On Monday, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg made her first public appearance since undergoing lung cancer surgery to remove cancerous nodules from her lung.

The 85-year-old was seen attending a concert given in her honor by her daughter-in-law, Patrice Michaels, who is married to her son, James, and other musicians at the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington just a few blocks from the White House.

The concert named “Notorious RBG in Song” was dedicated to Ginsburg’s life in the law.

It was noted that the justice sat in the back of the auditorium and The National Constitution Center, which sponsored the concert, did not permit photography.

Yesterday, Jeffrey Rosen, president and CEO of the National Constitution Center, took to Twitter to share his excitement of the justice’s attendance to the show. “Thrilled that Justice Ginsburg attended the first concert performance of #NotoriousRBG in Song. She, Patrice Michaels, and the performance were magnificent!” he wrote.

When introducing the last song of the concert, Michaels said: “bring our show to a close, but not the epic and notorious story of RBG.”

On December 21, Ginsburg had surgery after fracturing three ribs from falling in her office. During the tests to treat her broken ribs, the nodules were discovered and immediately raised the need for surgery which typically requires six to eight weeks of recovery. Of which has caused her to miss arguments at the court and make a first illness-related absence in more than 25 years as a justice.

Since her surgery, the 85-year-old has been recuperating at her home in Washington and has continued to work from home as she recovers. Including, participating in deciding which cases the court accepts and rejects and voting on cases based on briefs and transcripts.

This isn’t the first time that Ginsburg has battled with cancer, as in 1999 she had colorectal cancer and in 2009 she had pancreatic cancer.

While at the concert, James updated the audience about his mother’s progress of walking a mile a day and meeting with her personal trainer twice a week.
