The relationship, and later marriage, between pop-star Katy Perry and comedian Russel Brand has been continually presented as publicly dysfunctional. Both parties have not resisted from publicizing the most negative aspects of their relationship, especially after their divorce in 2012. However, Brand’s recent comments on a talk show highlight a happy change in the narrative.

The British actor and comedian, who previously heavily criticized his marriage as being “vapid, vacuous celebrity,” appeared on The Wendy Williams Show and spoke positively about the relationship and Perry herself. Brand stated that “it was a very, very wonderful time… [Perry] was lovely. She’s such a lovely person and I’ve got nothing but love for her.”

Brand’s comments here heavily contrast with the previous statements released by Brand and Perry concerning the relationship, most notably in their respective documentaries Brand: A Second Coming and Katy Perry: Part of Me. Perry clarified in a Vogue interview that Brand had announced their divorce through text message due to “incompatibility” issues.

Perhaps this change in Brand’s attitude correlates with his recent marriage to Laura Gallacher, a 30-year-old lifestyle blogger and designer, who is also the mother of Brand’s daughter Mabel.
