Pedro Almodóvar, Penélope Cruz & Milena Smit Attend ‘Parallel Mothers’ Premiere At New York Film Festival

The 59th New York Film Festival took place in person after a year of virtual events in 2020. Dennis Villenueve‘s Dune brought a mythic and emotionally charged hero’s journey to life, Joel Coen‘s The Tragedy of Macbeth offered an action-filled interpretation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, and Pedro Almodóvar’s Parallel Mothers showed a dramatic, yet heartfelt story to the big screen.

New York Film Festival this year combined in-person screenings with outdoor and virtual events. Making his return to the festival, Almodóvar attended the premiere at Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center alongside Penélope Cruz and Milena Smit.

The film follows two women in the maternity ward, Ana and Janis, who are a generation apart. Though both pregnancies were accidents, the older woman, Janis, is prepared and ready to have a baby, while the teenager, Ana, is scared. This story follows the two women on their maternal journeys, each having their own differences and familiarities. In between a mess of mix-ups and emotional turmoil, the story sends the viewers on a whirlwind of emotions, unprepared for what is about to happen next.

After more than 30 years of attending the New York Film Festival, Almodóvar continued his streak accompanied by the stars of the film. The movie is set to be released on December 24.
