A huge sale on Italian hazelnut cocoa spread, Nutella, has caused riots in multiple French supermarkets as shoppers try to take advantage of the deal.
Intermarché, a chain of commercial French supermarkets, offered a 70% discount on the popular hazelnut spread on Friday morning. The price went from €4.50 ($5.60) down to only €1.40 ($1.70).
However, French police were soon called to the supermarkets after reports of there being shoppers who became aggressive and were pushing and fighting each other to get jars of the spread.
Even workers were getting stuck in the middle of people fighting over the same. An Intermarche staff member told the French newspaper Le Progrès, “We were trying to get in between the customers but they were pushing us.”
One customer even shared a video on Twitter. The caption is translated to, “Seriously??! All for Nutella.”
There have been multiple locations all over France where the sales have led to violence, some of the fights are even being seen as riots. Due to all the incidents, stores were forced to limit one jar of Nutella per customer.
The southwest regional French newspaper La Dépêche du Midi shared a video of customers running towards the Nutella display, only to find out they were limited to only one jar. The tweet caption translates to “Promotional #Nutella jar hunting continues in #Intermarché in #Toulouse this morning: to avoid overflow, distribution is now organized and customers are “rationed” one jar per person.”
