With the CW rebooting Charmed and CBS rebooting Murphy Brown, ABC joined in on the reboot trend by picking up Greatest American Hero.
Unlike the original, which ran from 1981-1983 and featured William Katt, the reboot is set to have a female lead. The pilot introduces the main character named Meera, a 30-year-old Indian-American woman from Cleveland, Ohio, whose talents include drinking tequila, singing karaoke and not much else. The story will follow how Meera finally finds purpose in life and becomes an unlikely superhero after aliens entrust her to protect the planet after giving her a super suit.
The show is set to be a singe-camera, half-hour comedy series. American Hero’s reboot will be getting a modern twist, in a similar fashion to the 2016 reboot of Ghostbusters and the upcoming Ocean’s Eight.
The show’s pilot was penned by Fresh Off the Boat producer and Parks and Recreation writer, Rachna Fruchbom and will be produced by the Fresh Off the Boat creator, Nahnatchka Khan, and her producing partner, Mandy Summers. Tawnia McKiernan who was the TV director for Criminal MInds and Blue Bloods has also signed on to the show, who is also the daughter of the show’s original creator Stephen J. Cannell.
