Neil Young has shared that his attempts to gain U.S. citizenship have been delayed due to a new “good moral character” question on the immigration application.
Young, who wants citizenship in time for the 2020 presidential election, revealed that his use of marijuana has slowed that process. The Canadian singer shared, “I want to be a dual citizen and vote. When I recently applied for American citizenship, I passed the test. It was a conversation where I was asked many questions. I answered them truthfully and passed. Recently, however, I have been told that I must do another test, due to my use of marijuana and how some people who smoke it have exhibited a problem.”
Young shared this statement on his website. He noted that the addition of the pot question was put in place by Attorney General Jeff Sessions, which could potentially hold him back from gaining his citizenship.

“An applicant who is involved in certain marijuana activities may lack good moral character,” the addition read. “I sincerely hope I have exhibited good moral character and will be able to vote my conscience on Donald J. Trump and his fellow American candidates, (as yet un-named),” Young wrote.
He ended the post sharing that he would keep his readers update.
