Model Erin Langmaid Had No Idea She Was Pregnant Until She Gave Birth In A Bathroom, A Rare Case Of ‘Cryptic Pregnancy’

Australian model Erin Langmaid didn’t know that she was pregnant until she unexpectedly gave birth in her bathroom to a baby girl.

The 23-year-old model said she had no knowledge of her pregnancy – and no symptoms. Langmaid reportedly started to feel ill on the day she gave birth and only 10 minutes later had given birth in her bathroom.

Langmaid’s boyfriend Daniel Carty explained his experience, “I heard a scream and I ran in there and then I saw the little one.” Unfortunately, Carty quickly began to panic after realizing that the baby wasn’t breathing. He proceeded to call medics where the operator walked him through the process of helping the baby breathe.

Once Langmaid and the baby were safe at the hospital, doctors confirmed that Langmaid had experienced what is called a “cryptic pregnancy,’ which is essentially a pregnancy that is undetected by the mother.

Dr. Felice Gersh explained Langmaid’s cryptic pregnancy to Health. Gersh revealed that Langmaid was using contraceptive shots which can stop menstrual cycles, so a missed period was not unexpected. “She just didn’t conceive of the possibility that she was pregnant,” Gersh explained.

The biggest mystery in Langmaid’s unknown pregnancy was the lack of weight gain throughout the 9 months of pregnancy. “Although she was thin, she apparently didn’t notice nearly a 7.5 pound baby within her,” said Gersh, noting that the minimal weight gain was “uncommon” but “not impossible,” due to the fact that with women who are young and in good physical health may have tighter abdomens keeping the baby “held tightly to their body, as if in a binder.”

Carty took to Instagram to share the news of their baby’s birth. He shared a photo of himself, Langmaid and the baby, named Isla May. “Isla May was brought into the world on Tuesday night, she lived in mummy’s tummy for 9 months without letting us know. After an extremely tough few days both mother and daughter are perfectly well and ready to go home.”
