Michelle Obama Says ‘There Weren’t That Many People’ At Trump’s Inauguration In Podcast

Michelle Obama is finally ready to discuss Trump’s Inauguration Day in January 2017.

In a preview clip from her new podcast, Michelle Obama: The Light Podcast, the 59-year-old former First Lady revealed that she was “uncontrollably sobbing” after leaving the White House with former President Barack Obama.

Speaking to Hoda Kotb, the former first lady revealed some of the issues she had with Trump’s inauguration, which she describes as “so emotional for so many different reasons.”

She began by emphasizing that “leaving the home we had been in for eight years” was emotional in itself as it was the only home their daughters, Malia and Sasha, “really knew.”

“They remembered Chicago but they had spent more time in the White House than anywhere, so we were saying goodbye to the staff and all the people who helped to raise them,” she said.

Obama went on to recall the unease and disappointment she felt about the lack of diversity at Trump’s inauguration. “To sit on that stage and watch the opposite of what we represented on display — there was no diversity, there was no color on that stage,” she said. “There was no reflection of the broader sense of America.”

Referring to pictures of her during the inauguration, Obama explained that many questioned how she felt and asked whether she was not in a good mood. “No, I was not! But you had to hold it together like you do for eight years,” she recalled.

As she described how it felt to leave the White House as the first family for the final time, Obama weighed into the debate about the inauguration crowd size, which Trump has repeatedly claimed to have been the largest audience in history.

“You walk through the Capitol, you wave goodbye, you get on Marine One, and you take your last flight flying over the Capitol, where there weren’t that many people there — we saw it, by the way!

She recalled that once they were on Air Force One for the final time, she “cried for 30 minutes straight, uncontrollable sobbing, because that’s how much we were holding it together for eight years.”

Barack Obama had previously commented on how he felt during Trump’s inauguration in a BBC radio interview with Prince Harry, where he praised his wife and explained how thankful he was for her presence during the whole process.
