On Wednesday, Matt Lauer, 61, broke his silence about the latest rape allegations made against him by former NBC staffer and colleague Brooke Nevils, 35. In a lengthy letter Lauer stated, “I have never assaulted anyone or forced anyone to have sex. Period. My silence has been a mistake. Old stories are being recycled, titillating details are being added, and a dangerous and defamatory new allegation is being made. All are being spread as part of a promotional effort to sell a book. It’s outrageous.”
While Lauer is denying all of Nevils’s allegations, other journalists are showing support for her during this time. Supporters include Lauer’s former co-anchor Ann Curry and journalist Ronan Farrow. On October 9, Curry tweeted out that Nevils is a credible young woman of good character and that she believes Nevils is telling the truth.
According to Variety, Farrow’s upcoming book Catch and Kill reports the alleged rape to have occurred at the 2014 Sochi Olympics. In the book, Farrow describes Lauer’s behavior as inappropriate and claims that the anchor had been a part of seven separate acts of workplace sexual misconduct. Farrow says that the network had knowledge of Lauer’s behavior but did not take any action because of secret money deals made to keep the scandal quiet.
