To say Kesha has been through a lot this year is a huge an understatement. Last Wednesday, The New York Times Magazine released an interview of the singer, who opened up about herself since the media frenzy has engulfed her and hinted about new upcoming music.
Her legal battle with producer Dr. Luke, which began in 2014, intensified last spring when a New York judge dismissed her case. The lawsuit started nearly two years ago when Kesha accused Dr. Luke of sexual abuse, attempting to cancel her contract with Sony. However, the singer recently dropped all remaining sexual abuse charges, explaining that she wants to focus on new music.
The pop star opened up about what she has been through recently. Kesha confirmed that she has submitted 22 songs to parent company Sony Music earlier this summer. During the interview, she previewed four of her new songs “Hunt You Down,” “Learn to Let It Go,” “Rose” and “Rainbow.”
Kesha also discussed her decision to admit herself into rehab for an eating disorder in 2014. It was in rehab where she began to write new music, including the song called “Rainbow,” which she wrote using a toy keyboard. “As you grow up and you grow awareness, some say ignorance is bliss, and in some ways, it is, but once you realize and you gain knowledge, it’s there, and you can’t deny it. And now I’m very much aware of things that I wasn’t before, and it keeps me more accountable for my actions,” she said. “I was taking back my strength, and I was taking back my voice, and taking back my power, taking back my body. I’m just taking back my life.” she confessed. “To this day, I’ve never released a single that’s a true ballad. I feel like those are the songs that balance out the perception of you, because you can be a fun girl. You can go and have a crazy night out, but you also, as a human being, have vulnerable emotions. You have love.”
According to the magazine, the songstress is still unable to drop new music pending contract litigation. Sony previously confirmed that Kesha’s new album is in the works, but it is unclear when the new tunes will be released. “Creating a new album takes time, and everyone’s goal is to deliver a high-quality album consistent with Kesha’s past releases. We hope to share exciting new music with Kesha’s fans soon,” the company said a recent statement echoing Luke’s sentiments.
Kesha also shared an anecdote about her breakout single “TiK ToK.” She explained that she basically intended for the song to be “ironic.” But she said that Dr. Luke kept urging her to “make it more dumb.” Moreover, the singer suggests that she was “under immense pressure to starve myself” when working with her former producer. “I tried to and almost killed myself in the process,” she explained.
