Katie Couric and Meredith Vieira are returning to the Today show starting in January to fill in for regular Savannah Guthrie, who will be out on maternity leave.
Couric was a regular on the show for 17 years from 1989 to 2006, starting out as a specialcorrespondent and becoming the show’s co-anchor in 1991. Couric will return Jan. 2 and on Jan. 9 will be joined by Vieira, who took over for Couric when she left in 2006 and stayed on the show for five years.
Couric has returned at various times to the show as a correspondent, and in 2012 filled in on the show’s rival, ABC’s Good Morning America, for a week.
Today is approaching its 65th anniversary, just as Couric and Vieira make their returns. Anchor Matt Lauer will also be celebrating his 20th anniversary with the show. “It’s going to be fun,” Lauer said of the return of his ex-co-hosts. “A walk down memory lane.”
In the meantime, Guthrie will be at home with her newborn baby boy Charley and her daughter Vale.
