At this year’s VMA’s Taylor Swift snagged the award for video of the year for her glossy LGBTQ anthem “You Need to Calm Down.”
Though an incredible achievement, what has been making headlines is John Travolta‘s presentation of the award.
In the video, Travolta calls out Swift’s name and begins to hand the award off — but not to Swift – drag artist Jade Jolie, who stars alongside Swift in the video, dressed in pink has an uncanny likeness to Swift. Travolta seemed to mistake the drag artist for the pop sensation.
Following the incident, Travolta took to social media to speak out about the blunder. The actor, who previously introduced Idina Menzel as “Adele Dazeem” during the 2014 Academy Awards, said “There were so many people that bombarded the stage that I was looking for her,” he said. “So the video has me trying to find her but I thought it was so funny, the way it was interpreted. And it was cool, I didn’t care.”
He even said he “actually kind of loved it.” He continued, “I’ve been friends with Taylor Swift, she’s been so good to my daughter and my wife during concerts, I’ve written her notes and she’s written me back.”
And Swift, didn’t seem to care either. Later, she and Jolie were seen in a viral Twitter video celebrating the award.
And apparently, Travolta wasn’t the only one who got the pair mixed up. In an interview, Jade Jolie explained how Travolta was only one of the many stars to mistake her for the “You Need to Calm Down Singer” at the VMAS.
“Funny enough, when we were walking in the back [during the VMAs], where it’s mainly dancers and stuff, I got tired of saying, ‘No, I’m not her,’ so I just started hugging people! ‘So nice to meet you, too!’” Jolie said in the interview, which was published on Thursday, August 29.
Even Gigi Hadid, one of Swift’s closest friends mistook Jolie for Swift.
“At the afterparty Gigi Hadid kept thinking I was Taylor — they’re really good friends,” she said. “The drunker we got, I guess the more Taylor I became for everyone!”
In addition to Video of the Year, Swift also took home VMAs for Video for Good and Best Visual Effects for “You Need to Calm Down.”
