Joey “Jaws” Chestnut Sets Record In Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest

Joey “Jaws” Chestnut won his tenth title in the Nathan’s Famous July Fourth hot dog eating contest, and broke the contest record along the way.

Chestnut downed 72 dogs and buns in just 10 minutes on the Coney Island boardwalk on Independence Day, snagging his tenth win. He beat his own record and lifted up the prized Mustard Belt. The runner up, Carmen Cincotti, ate just 60 dogs in the same amount of time.

In the women’s competition, Miki Sudo won for her fourth time in a row, eating 41 dogs and buns. She beat out Michelle Lesco, who ate 32 in the allotted time.

During the men’s event, police say five people were taken into custody after trying to disrupt the contest. They were attempting to unveil a black banner, but police detained them before they could. They were later questioned and released.

Last year, Chestnut chomped down 70 dogs to to take back the title from 25-year-old YouTuber and competitive eater Matt Stonie. This year he was only able to swallow 48 dogs, putting him in third place. Chestnut, 33, took down his then-record by two. “There’s no secret, I love to eat, and I love doing it, I love to win, so I had to figure out my body and push it to the limit,” Chestnut, 33, said following his victory.

Second-place winner Cincotti said he’s eaten a thousand hot dogs in preparation since May, and even getting to second place is “surreal – I grew up watching this contest.” The contest dates back to 1972.

On the women’s side, Sudo won against her longtime rival Sonya “The Black Widow” Thomas, 50. She came in third on Tuesday, eating 30 dogs and buns, well behind her PR of 45.
