Jane Fonda Reveals She’s Being Treated With Chemotherapy For Cancer

Actress Jane Fonda revealed via Instagram that she’s been diagnosed with cancer.

The 84-year-old posted a selfie and wrote, “I’ve been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and have started chemo treatments. This is a very treatable cancer. 80% of people survive, so I feel very lucky.”

She added, “I’m also lucky because I have access to health insurance and access to the best doctors and treatments. I realize, and it’s painful, that I am privileged in this.”

The actress acknowledged that many American families do not have the same high-quality care available to them in this situation. She also urged her followers to discuss “not just… cures,” but also the causes of cancer.

“People need to know that fossil fuels cause cancer,” she wrote.

Fonda called the illness “a teacher” and explained that she’s learning “the importance of community” and “adapting to new realities.”

Of course, regardless of her diagnosis, the iconic performer and activist doesn’t plan to stop fighting for what she believes in.

She shared that she’s been “handling the treatments quite well” for six months now, and vowed to “not let any of this interfere with [her] climate activism.”

“We’re living through the most consequential time in human history because what we do or don’t do right now will determine what kind of future there will be,” Fonda wrote. “And I will not allow cancer to keep me from doing all I can, using every tool in my toolbox and that very much includes continuing to build this Fire Drill Fridays community and finding new ways to use our collective strength to make change.”

She also noted, “The midterms are looming, and they are beyond consequential so you can count on me to be right there together with you as we grow our army of climate champions.”

Fonda’s civil disobedience effort, “Fire Drill Fridays,” was partially inspired by 19-year-old Swedish climate activist, Greta Thunberg. The Grace and Frankie star launched the series of weekly protests in October 2019, and was arrested at the events several times.

The activist has also previously had skin cancer, and a tumor removed from her breast in 2010.

Fonda did not comment on how the diagnosis will affect her acting career.
