Ivanka Trump went to a textile facility in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to promote a U.S. government initiative meant to advance women.
The project, financed by a $50 million fund from the U.S. international development aid agency, seeks to improve economic growth in developing countries.
“Fundamentally we believe that investing in women is a smart development policy and it’s smart business. It is also in our security interests because women when they are empowered they foster peace and stability and we have seen this play out time and time again,” said Trump in a statement.
Ivanka’s visit has however drawn some controversy in the area due to her father’s “America First” policy and the cutting back of foreign aid.

“I don’t think people will have a good feeling about his daughter’s visit this time around to promote her global initiative towards women,” said Ethiopian journalist Sisay Woubshet.
Ivanka’s visit also includes a visit to Ivory Coast, where a gathering part of the World Bank’s Women Entrepreneurs Finance Initiative is taking place. Her father has recently pushed for her to be the head of the World Bank.
