Grey’s Anatomy premiered the first episode of the show’s 16th season last night on ABC. The last episode of season 15 left viewers with many questions about the future of the show. The season 15 finale showed the series potentially losing all of its original characters. Meredith (Ellen Pompeo), Alex (Justin Chambers) and Richard (James Pickens Jr.) were all fired by Bailey (Chandra Wilson) because of Meredith’s actions trying to get insurance for one of her patients. The finale left viewers wondering what characters would be returning, as well as the future for Grey-Sloan Memorial. The premiere answered some questions, but the drama seemed to be escalating.

The episode featured break-ups, proposals and pregnancy, but still left many questions unanswered. Here’s what went down:
Meredith was shown completing community service hours (her punishment for the insurance mis-hap), although the end of the episode revealed she may lose her medical license. Amelia is pregnant, and the father of the baby is unknown. Alex proposes to Jo (again) after her time in the psychiatric facility is over. And last but not least, Maggie and Jackson break up.
The premiere left a lot to be uncovered in the rest of the season, especially Meredith’s status as a doctor. The show, which first aired in 2005, has lost many of its key players over the years, but it seems the show really can’t go on with without Meredith Grey.
