‘Gilmore Girls’ And Netflix In Talks To Renew Show

America’s favorite mother-daughter duo may again find their way back onto the small screen. Netflix’s chief content officer, Ted Sarandos, said that “very preliminary” talks have begun concerning the filming of another season of Gilmore Girls. Created by Amy Sherman-Palladino and her husband, Dan PalladinoGilmore Girls ran for seven seasons on The WB/The CW, ending its run in 2007. In 2016, Netflix picked up the show and released four, 88 to 102-minute long episodes. The Netflix series was titled Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, and the new season in discussion would most likely resume where A Year in the Life left off.

“We hope [there are more episodes]. We obviously loved the success of the show, fans loved how well it was done,” Sarandos said. “The worst thing is to wait a couple of years for your favorite show to come back and for it to disappoint you, but they sure delivered and people were really excited about more, and we have been talking to them about the possibility of that.”

Also on board? The cast.

“You know the final four words. What do you think?” said Lauren Graham, who stars as Lorelai Gilmore in all eight seasons.

The four words Graham was referring to, of course, is the final exchange between Lorelai and her daughter, Rory (Alexis Bledel) in A Year in the Life. After creating countless parallels between the life of Lorelai, the mother, and Rory, the daughter, A Year in the Life ends when Rory informs her mother that she is pregnant. Lorelai herself is a single mother and the audience is left to guess who the father of Rory’s child is.

While both sides seem intrigued by the idea of a second Netflix season, conflicting schedules may impede the process. Bledel is set to appear in Fox’s Linda From HR, a pilot set to air this year as well as Hulu’s highly anticipated adaptation of The Handmaid’s Tale.

Also, Sherman-Palladino may feel that there isn’t more of the Gilmore Girls story left to tell, despite last season’s cliff-hanger. “We really had a very specific journey in our minds and we fulfilled the journey. So to us, this is the piece that we wanted to do,” Sherman-Palladino told The Hollywood Reporter.

Although Netflix does not release rating numbers for their shows, numbers have been leaked and suggest that Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life was Netflix’s third most successful release of 2016 – beaten out only by the fourth season of Orange is the New Black and Fuller House, Netflix’s revival of ABC’s Full House.
