Last week, Empire stars Jussie Smollett (Jamal Lyon) and Bryshere Gray (Hakeem Lyon) performed “Never Let It Die” on the American Idol stage. The two were accompanied by the six finalists left in the Idol competition, singing back up to Smollet’s vocals towards the end of the song.
Gray took on to social media sharing a picture of him and American Idol judge, Jennifer Lopez, captioning, “What a time @jlo #AmercianIdol”
The Lyon brothers took over the stage and had a phenomenal performance inspiring the fellow artist, by giving some advice regarding the music industry. Yazz shared how he started off singing. “I started performing in front of H&M’s, subway trains…I performed out on the streets. Just have the ambition. If you’re not getting the big shows you want, make a show out on the street, or go out just perform and show your talent. Somebody’s gonna see it,” he said.
As for Smollett, he told the Idol artist to “work your butts off” and to “sing, because you never know who you’re singing for!”
