Emma Watson had a creative approach to respond to Donald Trump’s surprising election win, handing out books in the New York subway.
On Wednesday, she posted a photo on Instagram of herself hiding a book at the 23rd Street subway station of the Chelsea area. This is not the first time Watson has secretly hidden paperbacks for subway commuters. Last week, she was seen doing the same thing in London’s underground.
The feminist actress distributed copies of Maya Angelou‘s autobiography Mom & Me & Mom, which is the November-December pick of Watson’s book club – “Our Shared Shelf.” The book is about a memoir that tracks Angelou’s relationship with her mother, which transformed from one of pain to one of deep love. Moreover, each novel included a handwritten note from Watson herself.
The Harry Potter actress has partnered with Books on the Subway, a free-form grassroots book exchange. The group is an offshoot of London’s Books on the Underground, which started in 2012.
“Today I am going to deliver Maya Angelou books to the New York subway,” she tweeted. “Then I am going to fight even harder for all the things I believe in.”
Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling sent her a message of support. “As I told you a couple of hours ago: I love you xxx.”
Watson recently expressed her dismay not to be able to vote in American presidential election. “America is my second home. I have friends there that I think of as family,” Watson said in a statement. “It has been excruciating to sit on the sidelines in the months leading up to this election. Goodness, I wish I could cast a vote.”
Watson is taking time off from acting to focus on gender studies. Back in September, she was in New York to speak on behalf of the organization’s fight against sexual assault.
