Rapper and fashion designer Kanye West is being sued by MyChannel Inc. for alleged breach of contract. The black-owned e-commerce and video company claims West broke their mutual non-disclosure agreement and exploited MyChannel’s confidential technologies to grow Yeezy Apparel, failing to follow through on promises of economic rewards.
MyChannel’s founders, CEO Julian Duggan and COO Gidran Gadsden, say they devoted thousands of hours and millions of dollars to the Yeezy brand, even relocating their company from Pennsylvania to Yeezy’s headquarters in Cabasas, California. The team claims they were used for their proprietary information and technology and were never paid for the $7 million worth of work they did.
West got involved with MyChannel in spring 2018 and allegedly promised a $10 million investment into the company. According to the MyChannel team, “He later inexplicably reneged on his promises, seemingly on a whim, and walked away from the successful partnership while misappropriating MyChannel’s proprietary and trade secrets.”
The lawsuit was filed Tuesday. The plaintiffs are seeking a jury trial and compensatory damages. “We will hold Mr. West accountable, as well as those who aided and abetted his conduct, and bring justice to our client,” MyChannel’s attorney Ben Meiselas stated on social media.
