In what seems to be, but isn’t, a belated April Fool’s prank, Hollywood legend Doris Day has discovered that she is two years older than she previously thought and that today, her birthday, marks her 95th year of life, not her 93rd.
According to published reports, Day, who was born Doris Mary Kappelhoff, was born on April 3, 1922, not 1924, according to her birth certificate which was uncovered after years of speculation.
“I’ve always said that age is just a number and I have never paid much attention to birthdays, but it’s great to finally know how old I really am!” Day said in a statement.
Day, who has devoted much of her life to advocate on behalf of animals, has always used the day of celebration to bring attention to the cause rather than to celebrate another year of life. This year, she has asked people to post pictures of themselves with their pets, accompanied by the hashtag, “DorisBirthdayWish” and a tag to her foundation, the Doris Day Animal Foundation.
DDAF tweeted out a birthday greeting before Day’s true age was discovered. It read, “Doris’ 93rd birthday is right around the corner, on April 3! Happy Birthday from DDAF.”
The age mixup still remains a mystery although Day’s spokesman, Charley Cullen Walters, has a theory.
“The story I have heard the most is that at one point, Doris was up for a role when quite young and her age may have been miswritten on the audition form. We don’t know if that’s correct, but if so it could’ve simply stuck for all these years,” Cullen Walters said.
93, 94, or 95, Day’s legacy will always be remembered.
