Two months, after Demi Lovato‘s overdose, her mother, Dianna De La Garza, finally has opened up about it.

De la Garza spoke about getting bombarded with texts, unaware of what was going on. It wasn’t until Lovato’s then-assistant, Kelsey Kreshner, called her that she found out.

“So, I was in shock. I didn’t know what to say,” she recalled. “It was just something that I never, ever expected to hear, as a parent, about any of my kids.”

When she asked if her daughter was okay, Kreshner told her Lovato was conscious but not speaking.

The shock left De La Garza unable to drive herself to the hospital so she had her eldest daughter, Dallas, drive.

“We got there as quickly as we could,” de la Garza said. “Dallas and Madison and I jumped out of the car at the emergency room and ran into the emergency room to be by her side. She just didn’t look good—at all. She was in bad shape. But I said to her, ‘Demi, I’m here. I love you.’ And at that point she said back to me, ‘I love you, too.'”

When Lovato spent the next few days in critical condition, De La Garza credited her faith with getting her through it.

She said that the medical professionals and “the millions of prayers that went up that day” helped save Lovato.

Lovato, 26, remained in the hospital for more than a week before she was released on Aug. 4 to enter an in-patient treatment facility.

When asked about how she’s doing now De La Garza said, “I can honestly say today that she is doing really well. She’s happy, she’s healthy. She’s working on her sobriety and she’s getting the help she needs, and that in itself encourages me about her future and about the future of our family.”

The former child star struggled with addiction, eating disorders, and mental illness for years. In 2010, Lovato entered treatment, where she sought help for bipolar disorder, bulimia, self-harm and addiction. She relapsed after she left but entered a sober living facility for a year.

In March, she celebrated six years of sobriety.
