Toffee’s foster family, The Smiths, took to Facebook with a call for help on a local page for lost pets. However, through the power of social media, the story of Toffee quickly traveled around the world.

For over a day, Toffee laid stuck in the hole. A rescue team tried everything to get her out, from tarps, ropes, food and nets, however nothing worked. Thankfully, just past midnight on Saturday, Paint Rcok Fire Department volunteers finally were able to save Toffee.

Fire Chief Finis Johnson said he personally saw the Facebook post circulating, that’s when he contacted the WHNT-TV news room to find out how he could help. “I’m an animal lover.  It’s good to know we can come out to help folks,” said Johnson.

Karen Smith, Toffee’s foster owner thanks everyone for the love and support they got from the local community. “To every person that came, I mean every person that brought water, that brought the food, that brought generators and lights… It’s been an amazing outpouring of just kindness and sweetness,” Smith said to WHNT-TV.

She also assures everyone that their family have plans to make sure nothing like this ever happends again. “I do not want to put her down — she’s probably going to sleep with me tonight, I’m not going to lie. And we’re going to cover that hole up,” she says.
