Rio Olympics 2016
The Daily Beast reporter Nico Hines was in Rio at the Olympic games looking for a good time. He had joined popular gay dating app Grindr and was getting all types of invitations to come on dates from athletes competing in Rio. There was just one problem, Hines was a married man (married to a woman) with children. Once Hines accepted the invitation to some of the dates he wrote about his experiences and didn’t leave out any names.
After The Daily Beast published Hines’ story, many people expressed their distaste for the story claiming Hines was disrespecting the LGBT community by posing as a member just to get a good story. So, the editor in chief of The Daily Beast John Avlon quickly removed the story from the website to prevent any more bad press.
Avlon tweeted an apology on Twitter stating: “We Screwed up. We’ll do better.” Hines has yet to respond to any questions pertaining to this story.
