Noted concert cellist Yo-Yo Ma gave a performance of Bach’s Suite No. 1 at the Juarez-Lincoln International Bridge, a site which links two cities located in Texas and Mexico respectively.

The performance was part of Ma’s Bach project, a project where he plans to perform Johann Sebastian Bach’s suites on cello in 36 locations around the world. The series seeks to unite people despite their cultural differences.

“I’ve lived my life at the borders between cultures, between disciplines, between musics, between generations,” Ma said to the audience, in a unifying message.

After the concert, Ma was rewarded the key to the city by Mayor Pete Saenz.

“Although people may perceive us as being so different, we’re not, here the border is extremely unique in that it’s one organism,” said Saenz. I’ve always said we’re interdependent, interconnected. We survived because the border side survives, especially here on the border area.
