Billie Eilish’s New Album ‘Where Do We Go When We Sleep’ Cements Her Gen Z Appeal

Billie Eilish, singer-songwriter beloved by generation Z, has 15 million Instagram followers. She is not quite a household name yet, but with the release of her new album Where Do We Go When We Sleep, Eilish is well on her way.

Billie Eilish Pirate Baird O’Connell was raised in Los Angeles and homeschooled with her older brother and cowriter Finneas. She participated in the Los Angeles Children’s Chorus and began practicing contemporary dance at age 8. By 14, she was recording vocals for her brother’s songs which they uploaded to Sound Cloud.

Her  song “Ocean Eyes” was an immediate hit. Darkroom Records head Justin Lubliner said it helped prompt him to sign Eilish to his label as well as to Interscope. Three years later, Eilish has built up a passionate online following and Billboard’s Social 50 chart, she’s bested only by K-pop megagroups, One Direction’s Louis Tomlinson and Ariana Grande.

The biggest appeal of Eilish aside from her voice, is her attitude. Wearing heavy baggy clothing and choosing macabre topics, she has separated herself from the usual young female pop star image. Her refusal to conform has helped put her in the spotlight.

“I don’t care what you don’t like about me. I care what I have to say,” the young star said recently.

Her music and interviews touch on more than just the usual. The star, who has tourette syndrome, speaks passionately about her condition and other social issues.

“I really care about the world, and global warming, and animals, and how everything is ending and I feel like nobody’s really realizing it,” Eilish said.

Eilish doesn’t let the public sway how she feels or who she is. “I’m fine with exactly who I am, doing exactly what I’m doing,” the 17-year-old singer said.
