Ballet Hispánico, the country’s premier Latino dance troupe, performed a trio of exciting pieces by female Latinx choreographers at the storied Apollo Theater in Harlem on Friday and Saturday nights. The first piece, Con Brazos Abiertos (2017), by Michelle Manzanales showed the dilemma of Mexican American straddling two cultures using musical samples from pop culture icons such as Julio Iglesias and sexy dance moves to playfully show the struggle of Latinos in America. The world premiere of Tiburones from Annabelle Lopez Ocha, deconstructed gender stereotypes in Latinx culture included the muscled male dancers moving in high heels. The third piece Naci (2007) by Andrea Miller explored the Latin and Jewish-American identities as the divergent cultures come together in beautiful movement. Once again, Ballet Hispánico pushes the envelop with daring dance to challenges as well as entertains.
