Better known for her feuds than for her actual music, rapper Azealia Banks has been caught in tumultuous downward media spiral in recent weeks. On Friday, she published an open letter apologizing to singer Zayn Malik addressing their Twitter fight earlier this year.
Back in May, Banks found herself in a clash with Malik on Twitter. The rapper accused the “Pillowtalk” singer of stealing her ideas, and when he responded, she lashed out in a string of homophobic and racist messages, calling him “curry scented,” “Punjab” and a “token.” Twitter suspended Bank’s account in May and a UK festival canceled her appearance.
Six months later, Banks has realized her mistake. “There are no words that can fully express how sorry I am. Recent events have taught me the importance of taking accountability for one’s actions,” the letter reads. “I want and need to say I am sorry, I was wrong.”
Banks told Malik that even though she has experienced discrimination “as a black woman,” she shouldn’t have verbally attacked him that way. “At times, I am so consumed by my own struggle, and the struggle of my race, that I forget to consider the hardships other minorities continue to endure,” Banks explained. “Coming from an ethnicity that is largely discriminated against does not warrant a license to use derogatory, abusive terminology nor does it give me the right to make hurtful remarks. I apologize not only to you, Zayn, but to all those I hurt and offended. I am not cruel, nor am I heartless or vindictive. There is a lot of love in my heart and there is good in my soul. What I did was wrong and I am committed to being a better person.”
However, the rapper is still waiting for Russell Crowe to apologize following an alleged altercation at a Beverly Hills Hotel over the weekend, in which she claimed that he assaulted by “calling her n—-r, choking her, throwing her out and spiting at her.” Recently, she dropped plans to press charges against the actor.
Crowe has not yet commented about the events of the evening, but others have denied that the actor made the alleged comments.
