The British singer-songwriter Adele set a new record this week by selling more than 10 million copies of her last album 25 just in the United States alone. She received the diamond platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of America.
The “Hello” singer received the RIAA’s plaque at Madison Square Garden in New York City on Monday night after performing six shows in a row at the venue. The prize makes Adele the first artist of this decade to attain the industry’s biggest milestone on two consecutive albums.
25 was released at the end of November 2015, and it took 45 weeks to get it certified while working its way up the charts. The album, which features the single “Send My Love (To Your New Lover),” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with over three million copies sold last year. Only two other albums have sold as many copies in less time – No Strings Attached from NSYNC (44 weeks) and Millennium from Backstreet Boys (29 weeks).
Adele’s fortune is estimated at $120 million. Her sold-out 25 Tour will end in November.
