Members of the Shakti Sings choir performed at Stonehenge today to celebrate the winter solstice with druids, pagans, and revelers.
The winter solstice is an important day for many, as a day to celebrate the re-birth of the sun for the new year. The winter solstice holds a greater importance than the summer solstice because, “At this time, cattle were slaughtered so the animals did not need to be fed through the winter, and wine and beer made previously had finally fermented,” explains Teresa Wilson of the American Astronomical Society.
More than five thousand people gathered at Stonehenge, an important cultural site built by the Druids between 3000 and 2000 BC. The sun rose at the historic site at 1:09 EST, which marked the start of the shortest day in the northern hemisphere.
People gathered to play instruments, sing and photograph the rising sun.
