Gwyneth Paltrow and Scarlett Johansson are at each other’s throats! Well, allegedly, at least. Although neither actress has given any outward sign that this is the case, since filming for Iron Man 2 began last year the tabloids have been insisting that the two actresses despise one another. What could cause such problems between two adult professionals?
Well, first the tabloids speculated that Gwyneth was jealous of Scarlett’s sexy costumes in the film. Why, you might ask, aren’t there any similar rumors about Robert Downey Jr being jealous of Mickey Rourke’s cool accent? Because let’s face it, unlike their male counterparts, Oscar-winning actresses like Gwyneth are only in it for the sexy costumes. Plus, it’s a universally accepted truth that all women are so innately insecure that the prospect of working with a younger, or better dressed woman can only inspire a terrible bloodlust in us. It’s biologically proven. At least is has been according to a tabloid’s “inside source” at a top medical school.
Then, Scarlett was envious of Gwyneth’s prominence in the film’s advertisements. Which you might think makes sense, since Gwyn is a returning character from the first film and the love interest of the title character, but that’s because you’re not thinking like a woman! Which is what Scarlett is, and it makes her susceptible to the same irrational insecurity Gwyneth suffers from. If Gossip Girl, 90210, and For the Love of Ray J have taught us anything, it’s that there can only be one Queen Bee, and you better lie, cheat, and scheme to ensure that it’s you.
To make matters worse, apparently some of Gwyneth’s scenes got cut and there is speculation that Scarlett’s Black Widow character may her own spinoff. In other words, Scarlett might as well have just punched Gwyneth in the face because one woman’s success is just another woman’s misfortunate. Not that there was ever any real potential for Gwyn’s character to get her own spinoff, but the tabloids don’t need logic to write their stories when they can just rely on the premise that they are dealing with two women, with irrational womanly emotions and hormones, and call it a day.
When is the last time you read something about two male costars not getting along? I can’t think of a single example, but I nearly every famous woman has had a rumored nemesis at one point or another. Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera both were young and sang pop music so they were pitted as enemies from day one. You never heard about the Backstreet Boys feuding with N’Sync (or with another, much less, after being stuck together on a tour bus for the majority of their young adult lives). Then there was Lindsey Lohan and Hillary Duff who hated each other because they both worked for Disney. Now it’s Leighton Meester and Blake Lively, whose supposed rivalry I can only presume is founded on an ongoing argument over who has bouncier curls.
It’s one thing if there is some validity to the rumors-see Christina’s Aguilera’s snide write off of Lady Gaga a year ago-then by all means, lets enjoy the drama. It’s really lame, however, when we’re force fed these stories about two women not getting along just because they’re two high profile women. Gwyneth recently said: “I love Scarlett…She’s like a girl after my own heart." If that is what the tabloids consider “claws coming out,” they really haven’t been watching much reality television lately.

HAHA! "If they have taught us anything" is key.
