A Deeper Reading of the 2011 Golden Globes

1. Ricky Gervais' makes a joke at the expense of lecherous Hugh Hefner's decrepit body: Halle Berry laughs, but does so in a way that also conveys both disgust and pity for Hefner.

2. Gervais makes a joke about the–widely discussed–heavily airbrushed poster for Sex and the City 2, whose star Chris Noth nods in agreement; his date, Tara Lynn Wilson, looks at him with scorn.

3. Katey Segal wins a Golden Globe; cut to former Married with Children co-star Ed O'Neill with a pleasantly surprised look on his face; announcer reveals that she had been previously nominated five times for her work on Married with Children. O'Neill must have remembered this.

4. Carlos wins Best Television Miniseries; cut to Tom Hanks emphatically explaining something to his wife, Rita Wilson. I can only conclude that she did not see the film, but he did; while his initial opinion of the sprawling epic was mixed, upon seeing it win a prestigious award, he concluded that it was indeed great and began to extol its merits to his wife.

5. Gervais introduces Bruce Willis by referring to him as "Ashton Kutcher's dad"; as he speaks, Bruce Willis appears to be choking back tears.

6. Eva Longoria informs the audience that some of the proceeds from the non-profit Golden Globes ceremony go to "film-related causes."

7. Buscemi is the night's second awardee, after Christian Bale, to "shout out" his table; thirty seconds into his speech he exclaims in frustration: "they're saying wrap it up already?!"; he is heeded and finishes his speech without being played off.

8. Announcer pronounces Alexandre Desplat "Alexandra Desplat" and Danny Elfman "Danny Helfman."

10. Annette Benning has won an award for The Kids Are Alright. She proceeds to thank her co-stars, but makes the interesting choice of referring to Julianne Moore (who played her partner in the film) as her "partner" and Mark Ruffalo (who played their sperm donor in the film) as her "sperm donor." Al Pacino visibly thinks this is stupid; when the speech has concluded, Pacino is shown again, clearly elaborating upon how stupid it was.

11. Sylvester Stallone expresses the opinion that The Fighter featured "great producing."

12. Al Pacino has a very young attractive girlfriend; Paul Giamatti seems annoyed that he has to quickly jerk his body out of the way to allow Pacino to accept his fifth Golden Globe Award. It is not clear if Giamatti was aware that the camera captured this moment.

13. Gervais says, in so many words, that it's good that Robert Pattinson and Olivia Wilde are good looking, because they're presenting Best Foreign Film, a category which no one in this country cares about. Olivia Wilde tells the audience that the five nominees "carry their countries' flags proudly," and then presents the award.
