Tye Sheridan Biography: Career, Credits
In an exclusive interview with uInterview, Sheridan reveals how his career began and his experience working alongside actors Sean Penn and Mike Tyson in the film Asphalt City (2023).
“I mean Sean’s a really intense guy – in a great way. He’s very engaged in what he’s doing, and I think he has a lot of respect for this community and First Responders in general, through a lot of the experience he’s had through his organization and some of the stuff in his personal life,” Sheridan mentioned.
“We were kind of leaning on each other a lot through this process, you know. Both of us. I mean, he’s trying to play a 25-year veteran medic, and I have a bit more leniency because I’m a rookie, but I think both of us really wanted to know what we were doing – and look like we knew what we were doing, really. And most importantly, just to convey this community in an authentic way and try to capture the nuances that paramedics exude.”
When asked about working with Mike Tyson, Sheridan shared a most memorable experience and a fun fact.
“He’s such a sweetheart. I know he can be mean if he wants to, but he’s a total sweetheart,” Sheridan said, laughing. “He was so excited to be there, and he’s very memorable in the film. He plays Captain of the station, so it was fun getting to do some of these scenes with him where he’s kind of laying down the law and seeing the more intense side of Mike.”
Thinking back to his time on set, Sheridan talked about his discovery of his fellow actor’s funny side.
“I learned that Mike has an insane sweet tooth, and I watched him slam, like, 30 packets of Sour Patch Kids in a one-hour setting, and it was actually quite funny. We were shooting one of the scenes one night and we were moving on to the last shot of the scene. I look over in the middle of this five-page scene, and I see all these Sour Patch Kids on the binder. Right in front of Mike. I look up and I’m thinking to myself – for sure we can see this on camera. I mean, we can’t use this so I just kind of, I’m like, hey guys, Mike’s got all these Sour Patch Kids here. Should we do something with these? He was like ‘oh sorry, my bad, like trying to hide all the Sour Patch Kids,’” Sheridan continued, with a light laugh. “It was a really memorable night.”
Sheridan also recalls two very clear moments that encouraged him to pursue acting:
“The first moment was just walking onto a film set for the first time and realizing – wow, there are so many people it takes to make a movie, and how that was so fascinating to me”, Sheridan replied. “I was so curious about the process. I was curious about acting, but I was curious about the entire filmmaking process, so I think that piqued my curiosity. Then, the second moment, I worked on this film. This was the second film I ever worked on. I was 15, it was a movie called Mud that Jeff Nichols wrote and directed, and it premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in competition. To that date, I’d never been to a huge premiere or anything like that. And suddenly we’re at, which is kind of like, the pinnacle of cinema in a way, and we had a 20-minute standing ovation after the film. People were crying, and up until then, it was just this tiny little story that 40 people came together to go make in the middle of nowhere in Arkansas,” Sheridan continued, a look of pure reminiscence on his face.
“Seeing that impact that it had – the magic that kind of jumped off the screen, left an impression on me. I understood in that moment how important stories were and how important cinema could be. It became very addicting, and I think it kind of christened my appetite for cinema and my love for it.”
