Skeet Ulrich is an American actor. He is best known for his roles in Scream (1996 & 2022), As Good As It Gets (1997) and Riverdale.
Skeet Ulrich was born on January 20, 1970 (Skeet Ulrich: Age 53), in Lynchburg, Virginia to Caroline Wax, owner of Sports Management Group. Ulrich considers his first stepfather D.K. Ulrich to be his father. He has one older brother, Geoff Ulrich.
Ulrich’s biological father kidnapped him and his brother when he was six and they spent the next three years moving from Florida to New York and lastly to Pennsylvania. As a child, Ulrich had poor health and had several cases of pneumonia. At ten years old he underwent open heart surgery to fix a ventricle.
Ulrich’s original name was Bryan Ray Trout. He got the nickname Skeet from his Little League coach who called him ‘Skeeter’ because he was as small and fast as a mosquito.
The actor graduated from Northwest Cabarrus High School in North Carolina and went to New York University.
In an exclusive interview with uInterview, Ulrich described how he got started with acting.
“Yeah, I was an extra in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in like 98 or 80,” Ulrich began. “But prior to that, I do I remember putting on, you know, I put on a play in my backyard in high school that I have written and staged and gotten neighborhood kids to participate in and people to come see, maybe that was the first notion, but it didn’t really hit me until really going on set and seeing the process and seeing what they were doing and then I kind of interested in and started doing theater in North Carolina. But yeah it was that initial, I think plays, theater, something about seeing plays that I found really interesting.”
Ulrich began his acting career with small roles in movies like The Craft (1996), Last Dance (1996) and Boys (1996). Then Ulrich starred in the classic slasher film, Scream as one of the killers, Billy Loomis, from which he was twice nominated for Best Supporting Actor.
In an exclusive interview with uInterview, Ulrich revealed how he used to drink with costars David Arquette and Matthew Lillard.
“Wow, Scream was so long ago,” Ulrich laughed. “You know, Matt and I struggle with this question all the time because like it was so long ago. I mean we had, you know, we had our average hijinks. David Arquette built a bar in his hotel room and we were shooting, you know, mostly nights, certainly a long stretch of nights at one point, and we shot at Napa Valley and so we would stumble in from work, a night of work stabbing each other and screaming whatever it is, and chasing each other around. At 6:00 a.m., it was time for our nightly drink, you know. So, we’d walk into the hotel as all these tourists were coming out to go on their wine tours and enjoy their day I don’t know I just remember that that’s sort of rhythm of it that was fun.”
His role as Billy helped launch Ulrich’s career. His other starring credits included As Good as It Gets (1997), The Newton Boys (1998), Nobody’s Baby (2001), For Sale by Owner (2009), Austin Found (2017), Scream (2022) and Blood (2023).
Some of Ulrich’s television credits include recurring roles in shows like Miracles, Jericho, CSI: NY and Law & Order: LA. Ulrich also appeared in 64 episodes of CW’s Riverdale as Forsythe Pendleton “F.P.” Jones II.
In an exclusive interview with uInterview, Ulrich revealed how his son surprised him in costume on Riverdale.
“There was one point in season four, I can’t remember the episode number or whatever, but my son had come up to shadow our DPS, he’s interested in being a director of photography, and so he was on set a lot,” Ulrich began. “And there’s a scene where I’m, you know, I’m walking down an alley alone and KJ Apa ends up surprising me and there’s a kid in his car that he’s handcuffed to his steering wheel or whatever. We do the first takes, big frame, shot dark fog, you know, everything rolling and I can’t really see too much ahead of me, and all of a sudden this figure comes running right at me, looking just like me, and they dressed my son up as a F.P., even put a fake goatee on him and everything.”
Blood (2022) is a horror thriller that follows the story of newly divorced Jess (Michelle Monaghan) who takes her two children to her childhood farmhouse. The family’s dog gets spooked and runs off, only to return feral and bite Jess’s son, causing a mysterious infection. Ulrich plays Patrick, Jess’s ex and father to her children.
In an exclusive interview with uInterview, Ulrich discussed what it was like working with Monaghan.
“We had a chance when I got to Winnipeg to chat quite a bit with Brad [Anderson] and get sort of the idea of things and I had a notion about the character and how that would help the tone of the film and everybody just seemed on the same page the whole way,” he began. “She [Monaghan] was so raw and real and available and emotional and present, I mean everything would just you know kind of be like living in those scenes with her and yeah she’s an extraordinary performer and heaps of talent and it makes it a lot easier when somebody’s bringing truth to respond truthfully. So hats off to her and you know Brad sets a stage that is just, I don’t know, it just all seemed to work. Then we’re just down the story, you know, like is this the story we’re wanting to tell?”
Ulrich also revealed his favorite scene from the movie.
“I loved the logger scene just because it’s a fun scene to vent in and I think we had a blast doing that,” he said. “The idea for this was for the audience to believe, like Patrick, that she was falling into drug use again, you have to set that stage and that’s part of what that scene does. It’s sort of the back story for her, you know, always being drugged out or passed out and we went further back and sort of building all that. You know, this must have been a guy that probably did drugs with her in high school or known each other that long, he wouldn’t have been from the exact opposite of her so we tried to pitch them in the same tone so that she wasn’t set up as an almost villainous figure.”
