Manuel Garcia-Rulfo is a Mexican actor. He is best known for his roles in films such as The Magnificent Seven and Cake, as well as the Netflix series The Lincoln Lawyer.
Manuel Garcia-Rulfo was born on February 25, 1981 (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo age: 42) in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. Garcia-Rulfo was raised by his father, Garcia Rulfo, and his mother, Grace Rulfo.
Garcia-Rulfo revealed how he first began acting to uInterview. In this exclusive interview, Garcia-Rulfo said, “I think it was my first play that I did in high school. The first time I went on stage in front of the whole school, and I just felt so good doing it. I was terrified because I was a very shy kid. And I remember going on stage while playing the part, and I just felt so free and so good inside. From there, I started to dig into it more and more until I decided that I wanted to do this for a living.”
Far from film, Garcia-Rulfo studied communications at Universidad del Valle de Atemajac in Zapopan, Mexico. However, soon Garcia-Rulfo moved to America in order to study acting formally at the New York Film Academy. He later returned to Mexico, where he would go on to pursue his acting career.
In 2012, Garcia-Rulfo achieved his break-through in the U.S. with his part in the film Bless Me, Ultima. His career trajectory continued to rise when he was cast as Vasquez in the 2016 remake of The Magnificent Seven. Garcia-Rulfo starred in this film along with fellow actors Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt and Ethan Hawke. Garcia-Rulfo also co-starred in the 2017 adaptation of Murder on the Orient Express amongst a star-studded cast that includes Kenneth Branagh, Penélope Cruz, Willem Dafoe, Judi Dench, Johnny Depp, Josh Gad, Leslie Odom Jr., Michelle Pfeiffer and Daisy Ridley.
In 2021, Garcia-Rulfo was cast in the main role in the television series The Lincoln Lawyer. The show was adapted from a 2011 movie of the same name which stars Matthew McConaughey in the same role as Garcia-Rulfo. The movie itself was also adapted from a 2005 novel by Michael Connelly.
The Netflix original series follows Mickey Haller (Garcia-Rulfo), a Los Angeles lawyer who practices out of the back of his Lincoln Town Car. Over the course of the ten-episode series, Haller takes on both big and small cases throughout the city.
Garcia-Rulfo spoke with uInterview in depth about his preparation for this starring role. “I spent a lot of hours watching actual footage from trials. I watched most of the hours of the O.J. Simpson trial to give me a sense of how they move – especially defense lawyers,” the actor said. “I had a lot of meetings prior to shooting with lawyers … defense lawyers as well. All my respect to them, because all the terms and the system that they have to learn is a hard thing.”
“When I was preparing for the role, my take on it was I really wanted to focus on all the obstacles he has and his vulnerability,” Garcia-Rulfo said. “We find Mickey Haller at the lowest of his life, coming from addiction and not working for so many months. I don’t know, there’s something really cool about watching the journey of the hero. You see him at the bottom of his life, and there’s something really cool about watching him get up on his feet. Everybody wants to cheer for that guy. I just hope that viewers are entertained by it and get some laughs.”
The Lincoln Lawyer is streaming on Netflix now.
