Scarlett Johansson & Joseph Gordon-Levitt On… by Uinterview
Joseph Gordon-Levitt was born on February 17, 1981, to Dennis Levitt and Jan Gordon. Gordon-Levitt, raised in a Jewish family, was the younger of two boys. However, his older brother Dan died in 2010.
Gordon-Levitt began performing at age 4 in a musical theater group. He was approached by an agent and began appearing in television commercials soon after, for companies such as Cocoa Puffs Cereal, Kinney Shoes, Sunny Jim Peanut Butter and Poptarts.
Gordon-Levitt began acting professionally at age 6 in made-for-television films such as Settle The Score and Stranger On My Land, but didn’t have his big break until he was 12, when he nabbed the lead role in the 1994 remake of Angels In The Outfield with Danny Glover and Tony Danza. He had, however, already starred in a short-lived television program called The Powers That Be. In 1996, he scored his second big television role as alien Tommy Sullivan in 3rd Rock From The Sun. Gordon-Levitt was a member of the main cast from 1996-2001 — he left in 2000 to attend Columbia University, but dropped out in 2004 to pursue acting more seriously.
Gordon-Levitt gained wide acclaim for his role in the 2009 film (500) Days Of Summer, also starring Zooey Deschanel – and was nominated for a Golden Globe for it. Since then, he has gone on to star in many big-name films such as Inception, 50/50, The Dark Knight Rises, Lincoln, and Looper. Gordon-Levitt has also been praised for his acting in films when he was younger, including 10 Things I Hate About You and Mysterious Skin.
Gordon-Levitt made his directorial debut in 2010 with the short film Sparks, which was selected for the Sundance Film Festival, and Morgan and Destiny’s Eleventeenth Date: The Zeppelin Zoo, which premiered at the 2010 South by Southwest Festival. He also was part of the team of producers for the Broadway show Slava’s Snowshow.
Gordon-Levitt’s roster also includes the 2015 film The Walk and the 2016 film Snowden. In 2019, he did a cameo for the hit movie Knives Out. He voices the unseen character heard at the beginning of the movie as Marta Cabrera (Ana de Armas) sits in the kitchen.
In 2013 Gordon-Levitt wrote, directed, and starred in the motion picture Don Jon, which received largely positive reviews. The movie pokes fun at people who want their lives to be like those of movie characters, which Gordon-Levitt said was the main reason he wrote the film. “Having enough interactions where people were saying, ‘If only my life could be like that movie you were in,’ or ‘If only I could find somebody like you in that movie.’ You know, hearing things like that sometimes startles me,” Gordon-Levitt told Uinterview exclusively. “Look, I love movies but movies aren’t real life and real life is so much more beautiful and rich with detail and nuance then any movie could ever be. Even a great movie. And you’ll miss it. You’ll miss all that good stuff if you’re busy comparing your life to what you’ve seen on a screen.”
Gordon-Levitt also told Uinterview that with all the excitement of writing, directing, and starring in Don Jon, there was no single thrilling moment – rather, it was watching the actors make his script come alive that he found the most rewarding. “To me, the most thrilling moments of the whole process, from writing to shooting, through post-production and everything, was those moments when these fantastic actors, that I was privileged enough to be working with, took text that I had written and brought it to life, brought their own individual take on what I had done and surprised me and brought nuance to it that I wouldn’t have expected,” he told Uinterview.
Gordon-Levitt has been nominated for and has won dozens of awards, including two Spike TV Scream Awards for Inception, a Teen Choice Award for 3rd Rock From The Sun, a Golden Space Needle for Mysterious Skin, and a Hollywood Film Festival Award for his work in 50/50.
Though Gordon-Levitt is best known for his film work, throughout the years he has appeared in guest spots on dozens of TV shows, including Quantum Leap, Family Ties, That 70’s Show and Numb3rs. He has also hosted Saturday Night Live twice.
In 2010 Gordon-Levitt founded hitRECord, a collaborative online production company. He invites people to submit their creations. By uploading, people are allowing others to ‘remix’ their work and, should the work become successful, share the profits with the company. Gordon-Levitt acts as director and his father, Levitt, is the CFO.
Gordon-Levitt has often remained tight-lipped about his personal life. He has dated Larisa Oleynik, Meagan Good and Alexandra Hulme. He is rumored to have dated his 10 Things I Hate About You costar Julia Stiles and Evan Rachel Wood. He also dated French model Meighan Bennet in 2012.
Gordon-Levitt married Tasha McCauley in 2014.
