Jack Lowden is a Scottish actor known for both his work in theater, such as his part in Ghosts, and his onscreen work, such as his part in the mini series War And Peace. This Jack Lowden Bio will let the actor tell his story in his own words.
Jack Lowden was born in Chelmsford, Essex, England on June 2, 1990 (Jack Lowden Age: 33). He was raised in Oxton, Scotland. He has a younger brother, Calum Lowden who has made a name for himself in the dance community. It was his brother’s drive for dancing that got Lowden into acting to begin with.
“My younger brother is a ballet dancer and he wanted to be one from a very early age, so I went along with him. And my parents – I’m fortunate enough to have parents who just let us do what we wanted to do. When I went with him, I wasn’t very good,” he told uInterview exclusively. “My brother Calum was exceptional, and that’s what he now does. He’s in the Royal Swedish Ballet. He’s a first soloist over there. So I just sorta gradually — in this ballet school they gave me more and more of the acting roles. I was the guy who sort of walked on and would narrate the dancing, and I realized ‘I’m getting a lot fewer dancing roles here, and I’m a phenomenal dancer!’ So I kind of fell into it that way. That’s where I felt comfortable. That’s where I felt at home. There’s no romantic story in mind. I just realized one day that that’s what I could do, and of course, you can make a living from it, so I went on and did it.”
After his attempt at dancing, his parents proceeded to enroll him in the Scottish Youth Theater in Edinburgh. Lowden then received a BA in Acting from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow as part of the class of 2011.
Upon graduating from university, his first leading role in a stage production was as Cammy in the National Theater of Scotland’s revival production Black Watch, which covers the topic of the Iraq war. To prepare for the role, Lowden had to go through an intense fitness regime. The production toured internationally to locations in Europe and the US. Lowden’s performance was well received.
He also played Eric Liddell in Chariots of Fire and Orestes in Electra at the Old Vic. Lowden also played Oswald in Ghosts. For his role, he won the Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role and an Ian Charleson Award. A filmed performance of the play was distributed in theaters in the UK.
Jack Lowden has had countless onscreen appearances. He had supporting roles in the series Mrs Biggs and The Tunnel. He received critical acclaim for his leading roles in The Passing Bells and War & Peace. He also appeared in the feature films ’71 and Denial.
He stars as the titular Tommy in Tommy’s Honour, a biopic based on the lives of Old Tom Morris and his son Young Tom Morris, who are considered pioneers in the game of golf. Lowden knew little about the game of golf or the innovators before reading the script and had to train in golf before filming commenced. He was attracted by the complexity of the script. “The whole arc of Tommy throughout the film. I found incredible the age at which he achieved what he achieved, then he unraveling of it,” Lowden told uInterview exclusively. “I found it remarkable and tragic and beautiful, all at the same time. Between the ages of 16 and 24 what he did and what he went through as a person, I just find amazing. I think it really has a beautiful, beautiful story. Even if you just wrote it down in three to four sentences. That alone is such a beautiful story.”
Recent film work includes the 2021 film Benediction and the 2023 film The Gold. Lowden currently stars in the thriller series Slow Horses.
Not much is known about Jack Lowden’s dating life but he dated his Edinburgh girlfriend Vicki Byers in 2014, and she could be seen accompanying him to the Oliver Awards in 2014. He married actress Saoirse Ronan in 2024.
