Bruce McCulloch is a Canadian actor, comedian and writer. He is best known for his work on the sketch comedy show The Kids in the Hall and as a writer for Saturday Night Live.
Bruce McCulloch was born on May 12, 1961 (Bruce McCulloch: age 61) in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. McCulloch was a student at Strathcona Composite High School, where he won two individual provincial titles for track and field and swimming. McCulloch graduated from Mount Royal College in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
Speaking about his start in comedy, McCulloch told uInterview in an exclusive interview with founder Erik Meers, “I remember when I was a kid in school and the teacher was mad at me and she said, ‘I’ve told you umpteen times not to do that’ and I said, ‘Yeah, but you never told me how many times umpteen is.’ I was probably like ten, and I got a huge laugh and I thought, ‘Yeah, this is kind of tasty.'”
McCulloch worked as a writer for eleventh season of the television show Saturday Night Live as well. McCulloch has also worked as a musician. He released his first album, Shame-Based Man in 1995, and his second album, Drunk Baby Project in 2002.
Additionally, McCulloch published his memoir, Let’s Start A Riot: How A Young Drunk Punk Became A Hollywood Dad through Harper Collins in 2014.
McCulloch has appeared as a guest star in a number of television shows, including Arrested Development, Gilmore Girls and Workaholics.
McCulloch is arguably most well known for his work in the series The Kids in the Hall. The show, which borrows its name from the name of the comedy troupe which created it, is a Canadian sketch comedy series which ran for five seasons from 1989 to 1995. The troupe “The Kids in the Hall” formed in 1984, with members Dave Folley, Kevin McDonald, Mark McKinney, Scott Thompson and, of course, McCulloch. The show was broadcast on CBC, CBS, HBO, and Comedy Central. McCulloch worked as an actor, writer and director for the show. He was also an executive producer for their reunion project, Death Comes to Town.
In 2022, The Kids in the Hall returned with a fresh reboot of the old show. The new eight-episode series has the same edgy, satirical comedy of the old show, but with brand new characters and sketches. The Kids in the Hall (2022) is available to stream in its entirety on Amazon Prime.
On May 8, 2022, Bruce McCulloch spoke exclusively with uInterview about his experience producing TallBoyz, a new Canadian sketch comedy series. The show, which airs on CBC, follows the antics of the group’s four diverse members. It began in 2019, and has been running for three seasons.
McCulloch said in the interview with Meers that he discovered one member of the TallBoyz, Vance Banzo, as he was sitting in for comedy scenes at Banzo’s college. “It was just that lucky interception.” McCulloch said of finding Banzo and his fellow troupe members – Guled Abdi, Tim Blair and Franco Nguyen.
McCulloch [went] goes on to divulge in the interview that what sets apart TallBoyz from other sketch comedy shows is the diversity of its cast. “Vance is allowed. That’s the fun part. We have a great scene in the third season about how bad the drinking water is on the reservations which is an ongoing insanity here in Canada,” McCulloch said. “They all have their points of view that are cultural or social, where they’re allowed! That’s one of the powers of the show.”
Fans can stream the third season of TallBoyz now on Fuse and Fuse+.
