Brenton Thwaites, born August 9, 1989, is an Australian actor known for his role of Jonas in The Giver. Thwaites managed to make waves very early on in his career; his early roles were while he was in high school, and eventually he and his family moved from Cairns to Sydney, so Thwaites could pursue an acting career.
Thwaites’ first major role was in 2011 when he was cast as Luke Gallagher in SLiDE, a teen soap. It received moderate acclaim with many critics citing there were similarities between the series and the British soap Skins. Though SLiDE wasn’t commissioned for a second season, it has enjoyed a second life in syndication on TeenNick and on YouTube. The series got Thwaites noticed, and he was cast on the long-running Australian soap series Home and Away where he appeared in 57 episodes as Stu Henderson.
After the role, Thwaites became recognizable to American audiences in the Lifetime TV movie remake of Blue Lagoon called Blue Lagoon: The Awakening.
2014 was Thwaites’ biggest year yet. He appeared in well-received horror films Oculus and The Signal, where he costarred with Katee Sackhoff, Karen Gillan, and Laurence Fishburne respectively. He also appeared in Maleficent, a live-action re-imagining of Walt Disney’s Sleeping Beauty. The remake starred Angelina Jolie and grossed over $700 million dollars worldwide.
The Giver, however, was Thwaites’ breakout role. It was his first starring role, where he played Jonas, the lead, in the adaptation to Lois Lowry’s Young Adult novel of the same name. While not a major success at the box office, Thwaites and his costars Meryl Streep and Jeff Bridges were given positive reviews by critics.
Since then, Thwaites has appeared in a number of movies including the 2017 installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean Series, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, and the 2018 film An Interview With God.
uInterview spoke to Thwaites and his costar Odeya Rush while they were promoting The Giver. They discussed a number of topics, including their costars, experiences, and the major changes in adapting the novel for the screen. Thwaites and Rush played love interests in the film, and they spoke about creating the chemistry necessary to make it work on film.
“Well, we find love throughout the film. It was important for us to make it clear that love is an emotion that we don’t have in this community. It’s been stolen from us. We take injections every morning so we don’t feel the extreme negatives and the extreme positives – if you will – of the world… of human emotions,” Thwaites told uInterview exclusively.
While filming The Giver, Thwaites met and extensively worked with Taylor Swift, who not only did music for the movie but also acted in it as well in her debut role. Ithas been rumored for a while they the two either are or have dated.
Following The Giver, Thwaites opened up about the time he spent with co-star Taylor Swift on set, as the two were rumored to be dating while they were filming.
“Yeah, it was a fun scene,” Thwaites told uInterview. “It was quite technical, I learned a lot in those couple of days we shot together. We’re in the same space at different moments in time and so it was an interesting… I mean it was great, we had a lot of time off set to play guitar, hangout and do whatever.”
Thwaites is currently in a relationship with Australian artist Chloe Pacey, whom he has been involved with since 2015. The couple shares three children, daughters Bridie (7), Peppa (5) and a third baby that they welcomed in 2020.
