Andrew Bowser was born on January 4, 1982 (Andrew Bowser: Age 41) in Bowie, Maryland. Bowser attended The School of Visual Arts and majored in film.

In an exclusive interview with uInterview, Bowser revealed how he started directing.

“I started with acting as a child,” he began. “I did some regional theatre and even some like touring productions of Broadway shows. And to be honest I was never a good audition-er and I had a lot of issues as a child with walking into a room and things being changed up on me. ‘Oh those sides that you were given, that not what we’re going to do today actually.’”

“At a certain point I didn’t think I could handle this lack of control so I started writing and directing,” Bowser continued. “And I don’t have that really thick skin that actors have where they can nail the audition, or not, and still do the job. I get in my head and spiral. Figured it would be safer for me to write and direct and get a bit of that control.”

ANDREW BOWSER BIOGRAPHY: CAREER

After two years of schooling, Bowser left The School of Visual Arts to work on music videos. Some of the music videos Bowser had a part in include Mixtape for Butch Walker and New Friend Request for Gym Class Heros, along with videos for Amor for Sleep, The Honorary Title and Speech.

With his roommate, Joseph Petrick, the two wrote and produced some indie films, like Notes From the Rogues Gallery and The Mother of Invention. In 2010, Bowser directed Jimmy Tupper Vs. The Goatman of Bowie, his first solo film. Then, in 2012, Onyx the Fortuitous was born.

In an exclusive interview with uInterview, Bowser talked about how he started creating Onyx videos on YouTube.

“While shooting at E3 in LA, I ran off with a camera operator and made a video package for a YouTube channel called GameSmash, which doesn’t exist, and I appeared as Onyx for the first time in that video,” he explained. “It got circulated and went viral and it made me want to make another. So the second time around I used an existing news video from Detroit about a satanic temple being unveiled and I filmed myself out on the street in Burbank and sliced it into that video. That was very very widespread. So I just kept doing that, repeating that format with him over the years.”

Bowser then went on to talk about his favorite scene from the movie, which premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival.

“One that really stuck with me was the sequence where Onyx speaks to a little demon in a box and is thrown into a flashback, which was also a payoff for some backstory that I had mentioned in previous Onyx videos but delved deeper into than I have previously,” he began.

“That scene was shot on our last day of filming in Massachusetts at 6 a.m. after an overnight, so to be so fried from these overnights and to be in an emotional state and feel vulnerable and also already getting emotional because film production was wrapping, and to be interacting with one of my favorite creatures of the movie, that was a really full circle moment,” Bowser continued. “And also to be performing a scene that we hope kind of takes the character to an even more serious place is exciting to me. So, I think filming that box scene was one of my favorite memories.”
