Alexa Pena-Vega was born August 26, 1988, to Baruch Vega and Gina Rue in Miami, Florida. Vega is fluent in Spanish, born to a Colombian father and an American mother.
Vega is one of seven children and is the second oldest. She has two younger sisters, Krizia and Makenzie; two half-sisters Margaux and Greylin; and two younger half brothers Jet James and Cruz Hudson Rue. Makenzie is also an actress.
Vega had her big break at age 12 when she starred as young spy Carmen Cortez in the Spy Kids franchise with Daryl Sabara. The franchise was highly acclaimed and went on to produce three sequels. The final installment was released in theaters 10 years after the first film.
Vega recorded three songs for the franchise — one was included in Spy Kids 2: Island of Lost Dreams and the other two in Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over.
Vega starred in the 2013 film Machete Kills. She spoke with Uinterview about the sexy, new image she developed since the end of the Spy Kids franchise. “I’m 25 now so I’ve slowly tip-toed into this transition,” Vega told Uinterview exclusively. “Hopefully the timing is right and the people who grew up with me watching Spy Kids are around the same age, so I think they’re watching these kinds of movies now.”
Robert Rodriguez, who was the film’s director, directed Vega in Spy Kids as well. “I’ve known Robert for 14 years so I had a lot of convincing to do when it came to this role because he wasn’t quite ready to see me in a more grown up film. He still pictured me as that little girl,” Vega told Uinterview exclusively.
“KillJoy’s such a strong and powerful character, and it definitely boosted my confidence. I’ve always been a bit insecure in that area and shy but knowing that I had to own it and that I was playing a character who was very confident in herself — I was able to take that away in my own life,” Vega told Uinterview.
Besides the four Spy Kids films and Machete Kills, Vega appeared in dozens of films. These films include Nine Months, Dennis The Menace Strikes Again, Sleepover, Repo! The Genetic Opera, Innocent (also known as Helix), Walkout, From Prada to Nada, Broken Hill, The Hunters and Wicked Blood.
Vega’s career is not limited to film. She starred in the short-lived ABC Family program Ruby & The Rockits in 2009, and appeared on shows including ER, Chicago Hope, All That, The Bernie Mac Show, Ghost Whisperer, Royal Pains, Big Time Rush, The Tomorrow People and The Middle. Vega recorded several original songs for Ruby & The Rockits, all written by Shaun and David Cassidy.
Vega was previously married to film producer Sean Covel. They married in South Dakota on October 10, 2010. Vega and Covel divorced in 2012 and Vega began dating Big Time Rush star Carlos Pena Jr. In 2013 Vega became engaged to Pena after less than a year of dating. They were married in a destination wedding in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico on January 4, 2014, a mere 18 months after her divorce from Covel was finalized.
Vega has three children with Pena, son Ocean King (6), son Kingston James (4) and daughter Rio Rey (18 months).
Vega considers herself a Christian, is an experienced gymnast and enjoys fishing. Director and friend Rodriguez bought Vega her first car when she turned 16, a Range Rover.
In 2003 Vega was named one of Vanity Fair‘s Hottest Teen Celebrities. Vega appeared on Broadway briefly as Penny Pingleton in Hairspray in 2007.
Vega is close friends with Twilight and Thirteen star Nikki Reed. Vega served as Reed’s maid of honor at her 2011 wedding to Paul McDonald.
