AleXa is an American musician and K-pop star. She is best known for her song “Wonderland,” as well as her time spent on American Song Contest.
AleXa was born on December 9, 1996, in Tulsa, Oklahoma (AleXa: age 26). Her father is Russian-American, while her mother is South Korean. AleXa’s mother was adopted by American parents at the age of five from an orphanage in Goyang, South Korea. AleXa has two younger siblings.
Throughout her childhood, AleXa took jazz, hip-hop, ballet and tap dancing classes. AleXa went to Jenks High School, where she participated in show choir and cheerleading. After high school, AleXa majored in musical theatre at Tulsa Community College.
Throughout her time in school, AleXa maintained an Instagram and Snapchat account where she posted her own covers of and choreography for K-pop songs.
AleXa spoke exclusively to uInterview’s founder Erik Meers about how she first got interested in the world of K-pop.
“I started dancing when I was two years old… I did cheerleading in middle school and high school, I did show choir in high school, and I did musical theater as my major in college,” AleXa shared. “I fell in love with K-pop back in 2008, so over a decade ago. Seeing someone on these music videos and these really cool photo shoots, I saw someone that I could feel represented through in the media… When I was younger, there weren’t many fellow Asians or Asian-Americans in the media that I could look up to. So finding K-pop was really my saving grace, my one true calling that really made me think, ‘Ok, I love performing. I would love to pursue this.'”
In both 2016 and 2017, AleXa, then going by the name Alex Christine, took part in the online audition Rising Legends. In 2018, she participated in the South Korean reality competition series Produce 48.
In 2019, AleXa released her debut single “Bomb.” On April 1, 2020, she released her first mini album, Do or Die.
On May 6, she released the single “Be the Future” in collaboration with the K-pop groups Dreamcatcher and IN2IT for the Millenasia project, which was raising awareness for the importance of education on the COVID-19 pandemic.
AleXa served as a host for the podcast How Did I Get Here? from June 23 to August 4, 2020. She worked along with the original host of the podcast and fellow K-pop star, Jae Park. At the 2020 Podcast Awards, How Did I Get Here? won both the “People’s Choice” and “Entertainment” categories, as well as Best Podcast 2020 according to Apple Podcasts.
On January 14, 2021, AleXa released her single “Never Let You Go.” She then released her second single album ReviveR on July 1.
On January 29, 2021, AleXa created a YouTube channel for fans to see who she is outside of the world of television. The channel, called AleXa 360, includes both vlogs and behind the scenes footage.
On January 6, 2022, AleXa released Tattoo, her third single album.
On March 3, 2022, it was announced that AleXa would be representing her home state of Oklahoma in the American Song Contest. The contest, hosted by Kelly Clarkson and Snoop Dogg, is a reality competition show, which is based on the Eurovision Song Contest. The show hosts contestants which represent both all fifty states and all territories in the United States.
Throughout the eight-episode series, contestants compete to win “Best Original Song” and therefore the entire competition.
On May 9, 2022, it was announced that AleXa had won the competition with her song “Wonderland.”
AleXa spoke to uInterview about what it was like in the moments following her monumental win.
“It was literally breathtaking,” AleXa said. “When they announced that Oklahoma was the first, I felt my soul leave my body, whether that was actual or literally all the breath leaving my body – Who’s to say? It was just such a touching, emotional moment because I was sharing it with not only my incredible, hard-working coworkers that flew with me all the way from South Korea to experience this, and one even flew in from Germany. My mom was on my left, and my dad was on my right and we were just holding each other’s hands and it was such a beautiful experience.”
AleXa went on to discuss her experience with the hosts of the show as well.
“Oh, they have been such kind and wonderful souls,” AleXa told uInterview. “I am so blessed and honored to have met them. I had time, a little bit off and on to have a little small talk with them, but overall their kindness and humbleness … that atmosphere was just so welcoming and awesome to be around.”
“Wonderland,” the song AleXa performed which won the competition, is available to stream on all music platforms.
In a conversation with uInterview, AleXa revealed that one of her biggest idols is fellow singer Doja Cat.
“I love her more than anything.” AleXa gushed. “I would love to collaborate with her. She’s just so fierce and so cool… She just has this vibe, and you wish you could be Doja Cat. I wish I could be Doja Cat.”
When asked by uInterview if she tries to channel some of Doja Cat’s energy into her own work, AleXa disclosed, “I do try to exude that kind of confidence I get from people like Doja, Missy Elliott, Megan Thee Stallion, and Lady Gaga – these incredible, confident women. I try to emulate a little bit of them in my performance because I’m someone who lacks a lot of self-confidence, and so these amazing women really hype me up in my pre-stage playlist.”
uInterview also asked AleXa about what it has been like relocating from Ohio to South Korea in order to pursue a career in K-pop.
“It has been so incredible,” the singer gushed. “I’ve been living [in South Korea] for the past four years. It’s not just the fact that I’m living there as a K-pop artist, but also I’m living in the country that my mother was born in. It just truly means a lot to me to now know the language, and the culture, and history of such a rich country. Through my performances on American Song Contest, I really hope to bring more light into Korea, Korean culture, and K-pop in general in America.”
