Pebble has a history of creating respectable smartwatches. The company made an announcement on December 7, 2016, focused on Fitbit’s acquisition of their brand. Pebble is no longer manufacturing or selling their products, but Fitbit will continue to run Pebble’s cloud servers until the end of the year.
However, stock of Pebble’s devices are still available, with the Pebble 2 currently retailing on Amazon. So, is it still worth a look in spite of its company’s future?
The first thing to be aware of is the April update Pebble released for their ecosystem. This will allow your Pebble device to continue to work even if the online servers aren’t. Moreover, other community-made services such as Rebble are being developed to supplant the soon-to-be defunct internet functions. As such, while much of the machine’s operations will be affected once 2018 begins, you’ll still be able to use it.
The Pebble 2 comes with many of the standard features you likely expect, such as a 24/7 heart rate monitor. However, The Verge’s critic noted how her experience with this feature often saw her receive odd, seemingly inaccurate readings.
Pebble’s final smartwatch can last up to seven days when fully charged, and it can resist water up to 30 meters. Moreover, a vibrant LCD screen adorns the watch, ensuring it’s always readable regardless of your surrounding lighting.
Like some of its competitors, the Pebble 2 has its own corresponding smartphone app for iOS and Androids. Updating your Pebble’s firmware is achieved through the app. You can also utilize the Pebble’s built-in microphone to orally write your text messages. Additionally, over 15,000 apps can be downloaded right on to the watch itself.
Pebble’s final iteration of their watch is solid, though fans of Pebble’s prior products will enjoy the family they’ve grown fond of.
