Asus VivoBook S510 Review: A Decent Laptop
Asus is a proud supplier of respectable computer components, from monitors to wholesale laptops. One of their recent innovations in the latter field – the Asus VivoBook S510 – proudly displays an impressively large screen. So, how does the computer as a whole measure up?
ASUS VIVOBOOK S510 REVIEW
The latest incarnation of the VivoBook harbors a 15.6-inch screen spanning 1,920 by 1,080 pixels. Furthermore, the display is fine-tuned with Asus’s 178° wide-view technology to provide a clear image at countless angles. Somewhat disappointingly, however, CNET‘s experience with the display deemed it merely adequate for its price point.
Furthermore, the keyboard’s quality echoed that of the screen’s; while its spaciousness was appreciated, CNET’s writer noted how it failed to provide an exceptional typing experience. There are three different tiers of backlights built into the keys, however, which is appreciated. Likewise, the touchpad worked fine, though it took adjusting its sensitivity. A fingerprint reader is located on the top-right corner of the touchpad.
Windows 10 Home is the default operating system, although Asus recommends you upgrade to Windows 10 Pro. Moreover, in terms of its other components, the hard drive is an 1000GB Hybrid Drive and it’s powered by Intel’s most recent 2.7 GHz Core i7 processor.
However, while Asus boasts of how the VivoBook’s strengthened Lithium polymer battery can charge itself up “to 60 percent in just 49 minutes,” the battery life is disappointingly low. CNET’s testing yielded a battery that sustained itself for just over seven hours, which is rather short.
This VivoBook only weighs around 3.6 pounds, so carrying it throughout your day shouldn’t prove to be too stressing. Furthermore, both sides of the device host ports for connecting other pieces of equipment. The right side maintains the headphone jack, USB 3.1 Type-C, HDMI and USB 3.1 inputs, whereas the left side has the SD card slot and two USB 2.0 ports. Sadly, Thunderbolt 3 connections are not supported.
Ultimately, the Asus VivoBook S510 is a dependable choice for day-to-day activities. However, if your needs, such as gaming or more intensive photo editing, are more demanding, you might want to look elsewhere. $800 is the default price for the S510, although it can be found for less online.
